Underground science: the XII edition of the Erice International school of science communication and journalism

30 October 2024

The 12th edition of the Erice International School of Science Communication and Journalism has just ended. Every year, around 20 students from all over the world participate, thanks to a scholarship supported by the INFN. The theme of the 2024 edition was “Underground science: Observing the Universe from below”. The school took place from 16th to 18th October in Erice, Sicily and was an opportunity to present and discuss some of the main experiments, mainly in physics, carried out underground, ongoing or under discussion for the future. The program covered the Future circular collider, the Km3net underwater neutrino telescope, the experiments for the search for dark matter at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory, the evocative biology experiments at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory and the future Einstein Telescope that Italy is candidate to host on the Sardinian site of Sos Enattos.

The International School of Scientific Communication and Journalism of Erice is a short school organized and funded by the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics which is held annually in the headquarters of the Ettore Majorana Scientific Culture Center in Erice. The school is created thanks to the collaboration between INFN and Nature Italia, the digital magazine dedicated to research in Italy and the Italian scientific community published by Nature Portfolio. The program includes alternating lessons, debates and interactive activities dedicated to science and scientific communication and journalism centered on the theme of each edition.
